的 为成就而阅读 Steering Committee is pleased to announce the selection of 浪费: One Woman’s Fight Against America’s Dirty Secret, by Catherine Coleman Flowers, as the 为成就而阅读 text for 2024-2025.
New Press写道, “Catherine Coleman Flowers, a 2020 MacArthur “genius,” grew up in Lowndes County, 阿拉巴马州, a place that’s been called ‘Bloody Lowndes’ because of its violent, 种族歧视的历史. Once the epicenter of the voting rights struggle, today it’s Ground Zero for a new movement that is also Flowers’s life’s work—a fight to ensure human dignity through a right most Americans take for granted: basic sanitation. 人太多, especially the rural poor, lack an affordable means of disposing cleanly of the waste from their toilets and, 因此, 生活在污秽之中. Flowers calls this America’s dirty secret.
In this ‘powerful and moving book’ (推荐书目), she tells the story of systemic class, 种族, and geographic prejudice that foster Third World conditions not just in 阿拉巴马州, but across America, 在阿巴拉契亚, Central California, 佛罗里达沿海, 阿拉斯加, 中西部城市, and on Native American reservations in the West.”
的 为成就而阅读 Selection Committee felt that 浪费 would introduce UTC 学生 to conversations in and around environmental justice. 的 committee felt that this text is rich for program development and has a connection to multiple programs and minors, such as political science and public service, environmental science, civil engineering, 和经济学, 举几个例子. Committee members are considering a speaker series with the author and one or more of the figures featured in the book itself. If you have suggestions, please reach out to us!
